Jahmond "Jay" Quander is Founder and CEO of 1799 Prime Steak & Seafood and its parent company, Irrived Hospitality Inc. in Alexandria, VA. Jay previously worked as General Manager at The Blackwall Hitch, and he has opened restaurants in Manhattan, NY, Annapolis, MD & Virginia. He was also previously Director of Food and Beverage Operations at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Jay is a descendant of the Quanders that worked on the Mount Vernon Estate, and established their freed slave community where Quander Road and Quander Road School stand.
Jay's latest venture, 1799 Prime Steak & Seafood Restaurant is rooted in the rich history of the Quander family. The restaurant gets its name from the year of George Washington's death, December 14, “1799” upon which his will provided for the manumission and freedom of his 123 enslaved, including Quander ancestors.
The Quanders: Since 1684, an Enduring African-American Legacy was released on January 29, 2021 and is available for purchase. Written and published by author and family historian, Judge Rohulamin Quander, this is the first detailed, historical account of the internationally known Quander family, one of the oldest documented African American families in the country with a 350 year lineage dating back to colonial Maryland. This new book is the first primary single source encapsulating this fascinating, multi-century story.
